Once a self-governing, self-sufficient people, America Indians were forced to give up their homes and their land, and to subordinate themselves to an alien culture. From the origin of their tribes in the 1500’s to the early nineteenth century, American Indians have experienced oppression. Today, American Indians are more numerous than they have been for several centuries (Andersen amp; Collins, 2012). These statistics are far from the 77.5 years of age life expectancy in Chicago, Illinois. The USDA Rural development documents state that Navajo (Lakota) have the lowest life expectancy of any group in America. Teenage suicide rates are roughly 150% higher than they are for the rest of the country, 15.8% for attempted suicide in Chicago, IL (Chicago List, 2012). In addition infant mortality rate is the highest on this continent and is about 300% higher than the U.S national average. More than half of the reservation’s adults battle addiction and disease, such as alcoholism, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and malnutrition. There is a federal commodity food program but it supplies mostly inappropriate foods such as high sugar and carbohydrates. Lastly, U.S Government and Indian Nations agreed to provide adequate medical care for Indians in return for vast quantities of land. However, the appropriation is very small compared to what is needed. Most families live in isolated rural areas, and there are few paved roads to access health care. Weather is also an obstacle on the reservation such as severe winds and temperatures reaching over 110 degrees, which makes it difficult to travel. (Keshena, 2010). Describe and Analyse Two Dramatic Moments Essay An inspector calls was written by J.B.Priestley between 1944-1945 but set in 1912. The play all takes place in the living room of a house, and although it seems that this would restrict the play, it doesnt. In fact it is very dramatic play with tension, irony and very dramatic scenes. The historical setting of the play is shown both by how things are perceived differently and the irony about how the future is talked about. References are made as to how things wont happen, Titanic-unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable, but they have and we, the audience, find this very ironic. Priestley also makes this play effective with the tense moments he creates with the skilful climaxes used throughout the play, which heightens the audiences suspense and creates the tension. The way Priestley writes gives the desire to find out who ultimately, was responsible for what happened. It is a very dramatic play, powerful almost, and so I will describe and analyse what I think are the two dramatic moments in the play. These are Mrs Birlings interrogation and the end. Mrs Birlings interrogation starts briefly when she comes into the room saying to the Inspector: I dont think I can help you much. Sheila then tries to warn her mother to stop No, mother -please!. Mrs Birling tries to ignore Sheila but Sheila is persistent, Mother, dont-please dont. For your own sake , as well as ours, you musnt -. Mrs Birling again carries on trying to explain to the Inspector that she doesnt see how she can help and Sheila also carries on warning her mother to stop. We, the audience, now feel on edge as we wonder where this will lead-will Mrs Birling be involved with the death of Eva Smith? We also gradually begin to notice Sheilas responsiveness to the Inspectors presence and questions. Sheila has become like the Inspector and she seems aware of the Inspectors point of view. It is obvious that the Inspector has made a big impression on Sheila, as Mrs Birling states, to which the Inspector replies, We often do the young ones. .It is now that Mrs Birling finds out one of the truths about her son, his drinking problem. This is quite dramatic even though little is said about it at the time when Mrs Birling finds out about it. It is only later that we realise the importance Erics drinking has in the play. However the audience find it quite dramatic as it is obvious that Mrs Birling didnt know about her sons drinking and this is the first shes heard about this quite serious problem, she replies to the Inspectors question of Isnt he used to drinking? No of course not. Hes only a boy. Most of the audience at this point would relate to the beginning of the play when Sheila says to Eric Youre squiffy. Eric gives quite an abrupt answer of,Im not.-possibly so his mother doesnt think anything of it. This is the first truth she finds out about her son; it is later on that she finds out the other. After Geralds interrogation Mrs Birlings interrogation really starts and the connection between Mrs Birling and Eva Smith are shown. Firstly the Inspector shows Mrs Birling the photo of the girl but she denies any connection when the Inspector asks if she recognises her, No. Why should I? It is now, from the Inspector, we find out the connection between her and the woman: she had come to Mrs Birling for help when she was pregnant and was refused. Mrs Birling tells the Inspector quite clearly that she believes what she did was right, the others disagree, and it was the father of the childs responsibility. This is a very tense moment because the Inspector has more or less confirmed that she does and we are in suspense waiting for the connection. After Geralds interrogation has finished Mrs Birlings starts with the presentation of the photo. Mrs Birling shows sheer arrogance at the whole idea of her being involved and she doesnt see why she should see the photo. She denies knowing the girl and so the audience wonders that maybe she doesnt know her, but again the Inspector confirms that she does, Of course she might have changed lately but I cant believe she could have changed so much. Again, being persistent, she denies knowing anything, but the Inspector comes down harder: Youre not telling me the truth. It is when Sheila sums up what has happened and tells us that she herself, knows her mother recognises the girl and that she is keeping something from the Inspector, that we, the audience, get more excited about finding out more about what happened. The Inspector introduces us to the situation Mrs Birling, youre a prominent member of the Brumley Womens Charity Organisation, arent you? The Inspector has to force the information out of her with Sheilas help, as Mrs Birling is very reluctant to admit how she came across the woman. She is very rude to the inspector with her blunt replies: I dare say there was, And if there was, what business is it of yours. It is then revealed to us by Mrs Birling and the Inspector that Mrs Birling saw the young woman only two weeks ago. The lady called herself Mrs Birling and told the committee that she was pregnant and her husband had walked out on her, but later revealed the truth that she wasnt married. The childs Father had offered the woman money but it was stolen money so the woman refused to take it. It is ironic that Mrs B, being a snob, said a girl of that class should not have airs because Eva did not want to take the money and yet we realise that Eva was more moral that anyone else. Mrs Birling turned the woman away with no help. Mrs Birling shows us that she is an arrogant, self-caring, egotistical, selfish person as one does still not see how any of this was her fault, it was the fathers, I did nothing Im ashamed of or that wont bear investigation. The Inspector, I think you did something terribly wrong-and that youre going to regret it. We know what she has done. We think the climax has gone butMrs Birling reveals to us again that Its his responsibility. If he refused to marry her-and in my opinion he ought to be compelled to- then he must at least support her. Again and again she goes into more detail about how it being the fathers fault He should be made an example of. If the girls death is due to anybody then its due to him.

Seiferth Eng 1302 Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and Flannery O'Connnors A Good Man Is Hard To Find are stories that deal with mans inhumanity to man by illastrating different situation, but lead to the same conclusion and with no thought of the consequences. Jackson and O'Connor use central characters to show how man has the power to distort reality into something the people accept into everyday life. Jackson uses tradition in The Lottery when she uses Mr. Summers as the announcer of the lottery every year. Mr. Summers was a person who believed in the lottery and never thought of ending this tradition. Every year Mr. Summers spoke about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box. When the people were asked to get in like to pick a paper, they had done it so many times, they half listened to the directions, (Jackson 235). For generations the lottery was always performed on the twenty-seventh of June, but the orginal box was lost, the rituals were forgotten, but the villagers did remember to use stones. Tradition in A Good Man Is Hard To Find O'Connor goes a different path of traditon but lead to same consequences. The Misfit like Mr. Summers is messanger of death, but for different reasons. Like the people of The Lottery the family in A Good Man Is Hard To Find both have a destination and a purpose and that is to meet their maker. The person in The Lottery is killed for being unlucky, and in A Good Man Is Hard To Find the Misfit was inprisoned for a reason he does not remember. It was in the best way to keep up his reputation as a killer, to go ahead and kill the entire family, and in this way in his mind he is saving them from sinning again. These stories were of manupalation of the mind. Jackson used two main characters to make the people go along and continue the lottery. The people of the village had been so brainwashed by Mr. Summers and Old Man Warner that they did whatever they said to do. When Mr. Summers raised one hand high and said, Adams. A man disengaged himself from the crowd and came forward(Jackson 235) Old Man Warner was the oldest person in town and always talked about the lottery in that it was a good thing because when the lottery is performed corn be heavy soon. (Jackson 236). The people have lack of independent thought when they follow Mr. Summers, and Old Man Warner tells the villagers to finish Mrs. Hutchinson quickly. Without hesatation the crowd picks up stones and start stoning Mrs.Hutchinson with no thought of why or if it's even right to do this act. When O'Connor had her characters manupalate the rest, the grandmother was loudmouth, know it all, always giving her son Bailey suggestion on how to go about the vaction they planned. When she suggested to her son to go to the house with the secret panel, she told him that it would be a good educational trip for the children. Bailey was not thinking for himself when he was following his mothers directions to the secret panel house. If it weren't for the grandmothers cat Pitty Sing they would have never come across the Misfit. When the Misfit did arrive on the scene he was in total control of his men, Bobby Lee and Hiram. The Misfit was in charge of everything that went on from that moment on. The only time in the story that he was a follower or lacked the indepence to question, was when he was inprisoned for something he could not remember. The only thing he was told was that he killed his father and that prison had papers on him. The Misfit blames the penatentary for the way he acts and his actions. The Lottery is a story that was about self-preservation of ones self. Old Man Warner had lived seventy-seven years and had never been the chosen one, so he was always for the lottery. To him the lottery was not bad because he was never the one

Murray was brought to trial by an atheist: Madalyn Murray (later OHair), who was working on behalf of her sons, William and Garth. Murray challenged a Baltimore statute that provided for the reading, without comment, of a chapter of the Holy Bible and/or of the Lords Prayer before the start of classes. This statute was upheld by both a state court and the Maryland Court of Appeals. Court Decision Arguments for both cases were heard on the 27th and 28th of February, 1963. On the 17th of June, 1963, the Court ruled 8-1 against of allowing the reciting of the Bible verses and the Lords Prayer. [emphasis added] Justice Brennan wrote in a concurring opinion that, while legislators argued that they had a secular purpose with their law, their goals could have been achieved with readings from secular document. The law, however, only specified the use of religious literature and prayer. That the Bible readings were to be made without comment demonstrated even further that the legislators knew that they were dealing with specifically religious literature and wanted to avoid sectarian interpretations. A violation of the Free Exercise Clause was also created by the coercive effect of the readings. That this might entail only minor encroachments on the First Amendment, as argued by others, was irrelevant. The comparative study of religion in public schools is not prohibited, for example, but those religious observances were not created with such studies in mind. Significance of the Case This case was essentially a repeat of the Courts earlier Court Decision in Engel v. Vitale, in which the Court identified constitutional violations and struck the legislation. As with Engel, the Court held that the voluntary nature of religious exercises (even allowing parents to exempt their children) did not prevent the statutes from violating the Establishment Clause. There was, of course, an intensely negative public reaction. In May 1964, there were more than 145 proposed constitutional amendments in the House of Representatives which would permit school prayer and effectively reverse both decisions. Representative L. Mendell Rivers accused the Court of legislating - they never adjudicate - with one eye on the Kremlin and the other on the NAACP.
